A full house attended the 4th Annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 21 in the Reston School, organized again by Michelle Hamel, Judy Lochhead and Joann Sauvé…Patrons of Sunrise Credit Union – Reston Branch had the opportunity to wish Jennifer Chant farewell, congratulate Sherri Bartel on her recent promotion to Branch Manager and wish Lorna Milliken a happy retirement while enjoying delicious shortbread and cider. Lorna retired on December 20 after 25 years with the Credit Union.

If you have ever seen the new Reston School Playground sign, either in person or as featured in a previous Reston Recorder, you may have been curious about the Zilliax Family Trust. The Zilliax family willed $3,000 to the Reston Public School…Reston’s own Tommy Lee Curtis climbed into the ring with wrestling hall of famer Jake (the snake) Roberts on January 8 at Virden Collegiate…Reston and Pipestone United Churches are happy to announce that after 10 weeks of collecting coins and socks, their final tally was 202 pairs of socks donated to Westman Women’s Shelter in Brandon and $682.55 in cash, which was donated to the United Church of Canada Mission and Service.

Mike, Darek and Stephen Vandenberghe of VanCo Building Supplies and RTM Sales celebrated their first year. VanCo’s staff has more than tripled in size with a total staff of 16 and have put up a storage shed….Kylie Hack, Halle Duncan and Hanna Wray participated in the Virden Fun Skate on January 5 and 6…Manson Moir was assisted by Dee McKinley and Beth Anderson opening the Time Capsules during the Canada 150 Celebration held Saturday, January 13 in the Tilston Hall…The event was hosted by the Tilston Community Club.

The community of Reston is pleased to announce the opening of a new salon, “Beauty and Beards”, as of this January. Keri Bartel graduated from Advanced School of Hairstyling in Brandon in 2004. She was worked previously at Shear Images in Redvers, SK and Hairline Beauty Salon in Reston. She is working out of her home at 582, 4th Ave in Reston…After receiving a development plan from consultants last week, the members of the Dennis County Development Partnership are ready to go to work on its suggestions. They shared a plan to attract a soy plant to the Virden area…Judy Lochhead, Janelle Greive, Al Wheeler and Mary Wheeler won the Reston School Grade 12 English Class Curling Bonspiel.

The Reston Rec Plex Board is pleased to learn that they have again been awarded the Rural Female Bantam A/B Tournament for February 23 – 25…Reston School hosted the Zone 9 High School Curling Championships. Congratulations to the Reston School for winning the Boys Championship: Ethan Campbell, Wyatt Ramsey, Kyle Campion, Alex Kirkpatrick and Hunter Hiebert, coached by Elana Wray. They will attend Provincials in Winkler on February 22 – 24…The Grade 12 Transactional English Class donated $1,844 to the Reston Rec Plex after their “Rockin’ the House” curling fundraiser…The RM of Pipestone was among the 84 municipalities that informed the province they plan to allow marijuana sales.

For the second year in a row, Van L Equipment of Reston received the prestigious McCormick Dear Excellence Award for 2017 presented in San Diego, California…Local players for the upcoming Bantam A/B Tournament include Rylee MacKenzie of Pipestone and Kenzie Blaine of Brandon…The Livestock Markets Association of Canada Board of Directors are pleased to announce that Brock Taylor of Reston, MB has been elected as the 1st Vice President of LMAC…The K-3 classes at Reston School, as well as the children from the Early Learning Centre, were excited to have a visit from children’s author, Glenella MacIntyre from Brandon.

February 14 was a day to celebrate at Reston School with it being the 100th Day of the school year as well as Valentine’s Day…St. John’s Anglican Church in Reston held a very successful Shrove Tuesday on February 13…Marion Mayert passed away at the age of 93 on February 7, 2018 surrounded by her family…Amanda Gray, Joanna Watt and Keri Bartel of Reston participated in the Southwest Business and Entrepreneur Expo held at Tundra Oil & Gas on February 7…Reston’s only pharmacy will feel the pinch in their profits starting this spring when a Toronto-based company takes over the contract to provide pharmaceuticals to personal care homes…Reston School Junior Reach for the Top members: Ian Mendoza, Jessica Kristof, Lillie Reaid, Marianne Quitiong.

The Reston Rec Plex was pleased to host the 2018 Female Bantam Rural A/B Provincials on February 23, 24 and 25. Teams participating included Neepawa Natives, Souris Elks, Grand Plains Ice Dogs, Pembina West Tigers, MacDonald, Westman Falcons, Mordern Hawks, Cross Lake Islanders, Carman and Brandon Wheat Kings. Congratulations to the Souris Elks who beat out the Grand Prairie Ice Dogs for the gold medal. Official sponsor of the Provincial Tournament was Cargill and Rhonda Rink dropped the puck between local players Rylee MacKenzie of the Souris Elks and Kenzie Blaine of the Brandon Wheat Kings…Congratulations to Brayden Gervin of Reston and Stephen Campbell of Brandon who went to Winnipeg over the weekend to participate in the Winter Games for the Special Olympics.

Local author, blogger and teacher, Sharon Simms, offered an inspiring talk to a full house at the Reston & District Library. There wasn’t an empty seat as Sharon spoke of her love of researching genealogy Sharon wrote her first family noel in 2010 when she wrote “your Grandparents’ Stories,” written for the younger generation of her family Simms feels it is important to keep these stories safe from being forgotten in years to come…Winners of the Reston Ladies’ Bonspiel were Mary Wheeler, Glenda Pollock, Diane Elliott and Judy Lochhead…March came in like a lion dumping heavy, wet snow on Sunday, March 4 and Monday, March 5, for the first snow day of the year. Classes in Fort La Bosse School Division were cancelled and business was quiet on Main Street.

Sunrise Credit Union, Reston Branch, hosted a very successful 4th Annual Stick it to Cancer fundraiser on Wednesday, March 7, raising approximately $3,175 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The evening began with a delicious pulled pork supper, followed by raffle tickets and a hockey game between the Westman Fusion and Melita Bisons…Whitney Paul was the guest artist and the RM of Pipestone Albert Recreation District Paint Night in Tilston…Reston School Graphic Arts teacher Frank Unger sent the Recorder some photos of when the mural of a tiger was painted in 1987-1988 by students Lara Campbell (daughter of Tom Campbell and Stephie Campbell) and Kimberly Dale O’Brian (daughter of RCMP officer, Pat and Janice O’Brien)…Reach for the Top senior team: Jason Brodkman, Serena Campbell, Ceilidh Brockman, and Hunter Hiebert…Circus on Ice was this year’s theme for Reston Figure Skating Club’s Circus on Ice…Jasmine Hamel, Shae-Lynn Davies, Camryn Raimbault, Marianne Quitiong, Jessica Kristof and Izzy Watt participated in the Westman Honour Band February 9 and 10 in Brandon.

Joanna Watt and Pipestone Art Therapy provides therapy services in rural Manitoba. Art Therapy is a holistic, person-centered approach to psychotherapy that allows for the expression of feelings, both verbally and non-verbally, through art, movement, and play…A nice crowd attended the Family Fun Night a the Reston Rec Plex where they enjoyed a chilli dog or pulled pork supper, family skating, bumper cars on ice and curling until midnight. The bumper cars were supplied by Tag Em Enterprises (Don Curtis’ grandson) in Brandon and were a hit with young and old.

It is always great to feature the accomplishments of a former Restonite that has excelled in their chosen field. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce Hayden Barré-Henuset, Financial Security Advisor for Freedom 55 Financial, a division of the London Life Insurance Company…Reston and District Library invited Moms and Tots for a special Easter gathering. Those enjoying the day included: Claire Elliott, Tripp Joseph, Nora Campbell, Blaire Kendrick, Paisley Stober, Savannah Kendrick....Cromer Skating Rink is now closed for the next few months as renovations begin on the waiting room.

Reston Memorial Theatre is pleased to announce that their fundraiser concert, Cold Hard Cash, was a sold out success on Saturday, April 7…The hockey world and Humboldt were brought to their knees as 29 members of the Humboldt Broncos were involved in a deadly crash on March 24.

April 20, 2018

On Friday, April 13th, after Chase the Ace at the Rest’n Inn, a hockey painting donated by Chyllisse Marchand, was auctioned off by Brock Taylor of Taylor Auctions. The highest bid came from Reeve Archie McPherson. After the painting was sold, additional donations were given to add to the total, making the week-long fundraiser for the Humboldt Broncos and STARS Ambulance a great success with over $4,000 from Reston School…Winner of the Tilston Quiz Night on April 14 were Cole Tilbury, Emma Gervin, Shannon and Curtis Gervin….Reston School Grade 7 – 12 Choir, directed by Mrs. Michelle Gervin, performed at the Virden Music and Arts Festival. …Sunrise Credit Union donated $1,000 to a tree planting project. Caraganas and lilacs have been removed, stump grinding done and 24 trees will be planted along the south and east sides of the park filling in perimeter gaps where Dutch elm and other diseases have claimed trees over the years since the Reston Memorial Park began in 1922.

Local author, Sharon Simms of Reston, has always felt a pride in her extended family and with the passing of the older generations, it became important to her to record it for the next generations. ”I realized my ancestors were much more than  ‘the dash’  between their birth and death dates,” said Simms…Hidden Treasures hosted an afternoon with coffee and cookies to celebrate their second anniversary...The Reston Early Learning Centre held an open house on April 17. This gave the community an inside look at what the centre has to offer. Several areas were set up throughout the daycare that are geared to inspire young minds while building an educational foundation that the children will use for years to come.

Seniors Helping Hands out did themselves with this year’s Rock and Roll themed Volunteer Supper…Reston and District Library’s renovations are in full swing. Walls are being painted and new carpet tile installed…Band students Marianne Quitiong, Camryn Raimbault, Carlos Reyes, Emma Ray travelled to Whistler to the Con Brio Musical Festival with chaperones, Mrs. Michelle Gervin and Mrs. Michelle Hamel…West Souris River Conservation District held their annual banquet at the Pipestone Hall with guest speakers Stephanie Frischie, Tim Poole, Duncan Morrison,  and Jen and Brookes White.

Reston School celebrated Music Monday by combining the 2018 theme song and their second annual Variety Concert on May 7. This year’s Music Monday song was “Sing it Together.”…Mommy & Me Painting Party was held at the RES Centre and hosted by Reston and Area Learning Centre.

The Reston and District Library re-opened. New flooring was installed, both laminate and a commercial carpet tile that is laid in squares that can be heated and replaced if needed. The walls and wooden shelving were given a fresh coat of paint and the backroom and bathroom also received a reno…Serena Campbell is a Grade 11 students at Reston School. She is currently working on a project requested by the elementary teachers to brighten up a corner of the elementary hallway…Reston School celebrated their support workers. Mr. Brad Rozak, Mr. Robert Duncan and Ms. Holly Gray keep the school clean and tidy and Mrs. Barb Elliott, Mrs. Linda Watt, Mr. Ken Milliken, Mr. Tom Campbell and Mr. Kim Davis drive the students safely to and from school…The Willow View PCH hosted a Mother’s Day Tea with entertainment provided by Reston School Grade 6  class.

The Reston Memorial Park hosted a Park Clean-up on Thursday, May 17…Fifteen ladies out of Virden, four of them of the RM of Pipestone, meet every Thursday from October to May to work on quilting projects. The group call themselves the Crazy Stitchers. This year a quilt as raffled off and won by Joyce Marsh of Pipestone. The proceeds from the quilt were graciously donated to the RM of Wallace Fire Department, Pipestone Albert Fire Department and the Goulter School Breakfast Program…A bike was found behind the Reston Rec Plex. The sad part being that the bike was completely destroyed from an act of vandalism…The Reston Rockets have mostly the same team coming back and entering the Southwest Baseball League this year with three new additions. Nolan and Tanner Jago are starting their first year with the Rockets, but have a long family history of Jago’s playing for Reston. Sheldon Moore has come out of retirement after several years to play…Kayla Kirkpatrick and Jayson Brockman are summer students of the RM of Pipestone Green Team.

It was a beautiful, sunny day on Friday, May 25, for the Reston Health Centre’s Hike for Hospice…Artists sharing their work at the Reston Art Club include Monica Campbell, Donna Davis, Sylvia Halls, Cathy House, Judy Lochhead, Laurel Morris, Bev Reid, Nancy Schiltroth, Hazel Stonehouse, Amy White, Richard Lochhead and Kevin Reid…Ten students from Reston School participated in Zone 9 Track and Field at the Sportsplex in Brandon: Brooke-lynn Rowand, Michaela Halls, Jasmine Hamel, Miranda Poirier, Shenesa Poirier, Mark Mendoza, Mason Smith, Carlos Reyes, Ian Mendoza with Ms. Riendeau and Mrs. Gervin.

The season is over for the Reston Elkhorn Melita Tigers High School Baseball. They had one win four losses, one tie and placed fifth in their division: Billy Patmore represented Reston…Good news for Reston people, the Reston Club House at Reston Golf Course is now serving delicious flavours of hard ice cream…Amber and Tyler Culbertson are excited to announce the arrival of Jami Adeline Dee Culbertson, born May 12. Proud first time grandparents are Kevin and Dolores Caldwell and James and Adeline Culbertson…A fundraiser for Canadian Foodgrains Bank as held at Reston United Church on May 27…June 7th is the 10 year memorial for Glen Walker…The Tent Caterpillar has made an appearance and has left a trail of destruction near the sandhills in southwestern Manitoba.

The Ron and Clair Deacon Pay It Forward Program hosted an awards ceremony on June 5 and 6 in Reston. The program donates $2,000 each year and gives the students the choice of where to donate the funds. Mentors included: Kayla Moore, Carla Cook, and Alanna Gervin….There are two ladies fastball teams playing out of the Reston area: The Westman Fusion Fastball team with members from Elkhorn, Reston and Virden and the Southwest Wildcats that started playing out of Pipestone…At the Fort La Bosse Recognition supper, Michelle Gervin was recognized for 25 years of service, Kim MacKenzie for 30 years of service and Eleanor Gillander who is retiring after 31 years…Mrs. Michelle Gervin presented graduating students, Shae-Lynn Davies and Jasmine Hamel with farewell gifts at the Spring Band Concert in Reston.

Enbridge contributed $25,000 Rural Municipality of Pipestone and Cromer Recreation Centre, in the Village of Cromer. The funds will be used toward foundation repairs and renovations for the local arena and community hub. They also contributed $15,000 to two organizations in the Village of Reston. The Reston School Parent Council received $10,000 to build an outdoor classroom for K-12 students, while the Reston Fair received sponsorship funded totalling $5,000…Terry Mayert of Brandon (formerly of Reston) was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in Morden…Librarian, Terri Vandenberghe of Reston welcomed everyone to Reston & District’s Grand Re-opening on June 14. Approximately 52 people signed the guestbook…Allan and Lisa Jones are happy to announce the marriage of their daughter, Alina Coryn Jones to Clark Joseph Zander…Reston Nursery School held their Graduation Ceremony on June 13 with teacher Mrs. Erin Derlago welcoming everyone…Grade 11 student, Serena Campbell of Reston School was presented with a token of appreciation for the beautiful mural she painted in the halls of the school…Congratulations to Dean Brooker, Manager of the West Souris Conservation District, who received the prestigious Manitoba Teacher’s Society Award…Jacob Leicht, at the age of 19-years-old, died April 6 as a proud Humboldt Bronco. Jacob was one of the 16 people killed in the tragic bus crash. Reston School and community members raised over $4,000 in support of this tragedy. A painting by artist Chylisse Marchand was auctioned off and Archie McPherson was the highest bidder. Archie and Vera’s daughter Brandi works for a financial company out of Saskatoon. Kurt Leicht, Jacob’s father also works for the same company. Arrangements were made for Archie and Vera to meet with Kurt and Celeste, Jacob’s parents. Archie presented the family with the painting…After 31 years, Eleanor Gillander has decided to retire from teaching at Reston School…Reston School presented Vern Forbes with a token of appreciation for building the Grade 5’s busy bars…Reston Graduation class raised $658.15 with a bottle drive on June 6, while helping clean up the environment.

Reston Graduating Class of 2018: Charity Poirier, Michaela Halls, Miranda Poirier, Brayden Gervin, Wyatt Ramsey, Kyle Campion, Ethan Campbell, Jayson Brockman, Jasmine Hamel, Shae-Lynn Davies, Jessica Adams…Sunrise Credit Union, Reston Branch and Seniors Helping Hands joined forces to promote Elder Abuse Awareness with coffee and cookies on June 21…First in the Stock Class at Sinclair Mud Bog was George Milliken. Super Stock - Kyle Fedak, Powder Puff – Tracy Baron. Modified – Todd Sobry and Open - Milt Fedak…Raffle winner at Sinclair Redneck Days of a “General Lee” racing lawnmower was Terry Price…Winner of the actual Lawnmower race was Vince Moore…To celebrate Sinclair Redneck Days 10th Anniversary, the Sinclair Lions’ fireworks, on the evening of June 22, was spectacular. A Manitoba based company called CanFire Pyrotechnics Ltd. was hired to put on the show…Forty five dragsters took to the Street in the Sinclair Lion’s Soap Box Derby.

Sunshine and children’s laughter set the scene at the Grand Opening of the Reston Splash Pad on June 28. Economic Development Officer Tanis Chalmers, Reeve Archie McPherson and Jason Lewis, Surface Land Rep for Tundra Oil & Gas posed for pictures as they cut the ribbon commemorating the official opening…The Manitoba 4-H Council recognized Darcy Campion’s volunteerism for the past 15 years with the Pipestone 4-H Beef Club…A just for fun, non-competitive Gymkhana was held at the Reston Fair Grounds on June 27 with 18 horses and riders of all ages participating…Pipestone 4-H Achievement was held on June 24 in Pipestone. Judge – Darrell Elliott; Ringperson – Ryan Elliott, Emcee Ashley Campion. Overall Top Showman – Leah Richard, Market Steer Champion – Tyler Vodon, 1st in Junior Showmanship – Dominique Lansing and 1st in Intermediate Showmanship – Avery Richard.

The Rockets played two games this past weekend to finish up their regular season with a 6-8-1 record. Rockets: Billy Patmore, Aaron Bertholet, Cody Bertholet, Braeden Gray, Braeden Cory, Dallas Williamson, Mike Williamson, Tyson Roblin, John Patmore, Tyson Anderson, Nolan Jago, Jack Kirkup, Sheldon Moore, Branden Ripley, Tanner Jago, Derrus Gray, Reed Loucks and Jamie Williamson (batboy)…The Red Hatters made a special appearance at Sheila and Alvin Dodds’ 25th Wedding Anniversary on June 15 at the Reston Golf Clubhouse: Joyce Marsh, Pat Hamel, Gail Froese, Carol Stairs, Dorothy Yeo, Betty-Jean Lazenby…Seniors Helping Hands provided a nice barbecue supper before Music in the Park on July 4…Tyler Vodon, ended up 3rd overall at high school finals in tie down roping and team roping which means that he qualifies for High School Nationals in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Tyler’s roping partner is Shane McCannell of Pierson. Tyler is also a member of the Pipestone 4-H Beef Club and is the son of Aurel and Rita Vodon, north of Pipestone.

Cassie Henderson and Kallie-Jo Marsh are the summer students at the Reston & District Museum…The Reston Fair Committee has a fantastic three-day plan for fair weekend, July 27, 28 and 29…Only two vendors attended Reston’s first Farmers’ Market at the RES…Leona & The L’Tones provided music at the second Music in the Park on Wednesday, July 11th…Pipestone Recreation Club held their 42nd Annual Fun Days on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15…It has been a very busy and exciting month for the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program. On June 3, a wild burrowing owl was spotted at one of our release sites. This was an exciting sight as burrowing owl numbers in Manitoba and across Canada have been on a steep and steady decline in the last 50 years and we have spotted very few owls on roadside surveys in recent season. The wild owl was observed digging outside one of our release pens where we temporarily house owls prior to re-introduction.

Reckless Ophelia provided old time country music at Music in the Park in Reston…Milliken’s Garden and Danille’s Canning will be in Reston on Main Street beside Reston Fine Foods on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m… Patsy Lockhart was the lucky winner of the Reston Recorder’s Facebook page contest of two tickets to the Dierks Bentley concert at the North Dakota State Fair for July 27…West Souris River Conservation District is pleased to welcome Jaimie Campion  as their Seasonal Resource Technician. Jaimie will be employed with WSRCD until the end of the year…Cromer residents are enjoying morning coffee gatherings in the newly renovated Cromer United Church basement.

Reston Memorial Theatre hosted Country Blend on July 27 as part of the Reston Fair Weekend…The anticipated Reston Fair took place last weekend and was a massive hit with Chase the Ace, Country Blend , Lawn mower races, bouncy castles, Zipline, Ninja Warrior Dome, Laser Tag, Axe Throwing and more, a variety of booths and vendors were also there to take part in the annual Outdoor Market…The gospel music band, 4 Given played at Music in the Park (Music in the School) on July 25.

Another Gymkhana was held at the Reston Fair Grounds on August 1 with 14 riders and horses from Carievale, Bellegarde, Melita, Hartney, Virden, Sinclair, Reston and Pipestone participating in pole bending, flag race, ribbon race, and golf ball in the hole race…Abby Green and Macalla Chalmers were selling iced tea, a great way to keep cool…The talented Izzy Watt and Shae-Lynn Davies performed a nice selection of folk and classic rock songs at Music in the Park on August 1 in the Reston Memorial Park…

Reston Rockets – Senior “A” Provincial Champions: Tyson Anderson, Cole Kirkup, Kevin McNeil, Dallas Williamson, Branden Ripley, Aaron Bertholet, Tyson Roblin, Derrus Gray, Nolan Jago, John Patmore, Cody Bertholet, Braeden Gray, Reed Loucks, and Jamie Williamson (Batboy)…Have you ever wondered what R.E.S. Centre stands for? Recreation, Education and Socialization Centre is the answer and now with a beautiful new sign erected, it is easy for everyone to see…Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement Program is now under way in Manitoba, cutting directly across the lands south of Virden. Line 3 enters Manitoba near Kola, goes past Cromer and Scarth and through Winkler before entering the US at Gretna…After a successful High School Rodeo season, 16-year-old Tyler Vodon of the RM of Pipestone qualified to compete at the world’s largest rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming from July 15 – 21. Tyler joined forces with Shane McCannell of Pierson and competed in tie down roping and team roping. They made the top ten in some of their performances but fell short to make it to the finals. Tyler was accompanied by his parents, Aurel and Rita Vodon…Zenith Paving is currently doing the prep work for some new sidewalks in the town of Reston, including the one situated in front of the Reston Memorial Theatre…Over the summer months, Oak Island Resort organized family events for campers to enjoy. On Saturday, July 28, D&P Reptile Rescue from Roblin, MB set up shop giving young and old the thrill of getting up close and personal with many reptile species…Lenore Campbell used the new Splash Park in Reston to cool down while having fun. Reports of thermometers reaching 40˚C+ in the Westman area made Saturday, August 11th the hottest day of the year…The Pipestone-Albert Recreation District offered a one-week dance class for beginners or seasoned dancers.

Tanya Martin and friends provided the entertainment on August 15 for the final Music in Park for the summer…There is a massive search for a missing Brandon man who was hiking in Germany, Jeff Freiheit, 32, posted a photo to Facebook from Bad Tolz, Germany on August 2. A Facetime call with him on that date was the last time his wife Selena Freiheit, spoke with him before he went missing. Selena’s mother Brenda Empey is originally from Reston, Dorothy Jago’s daughter. It’s a small world as Jeff Freiheit was a substitute teacher in Reston…Lee-Ann Chicoine of Storthoaks, SK are is focused on bringing her mom home after she disappeared in Carlyle, SK two months ago. Something the other and son business partners have always dreamt of. Lutsen is Minnesota’s oldest resort dating back to 1885…Doyle Piwniuk, MLA for Arthur Virden, announced that the Manitoba government is investing important community projects in the Arthur- Virden constituency. All smiling faces at Reston School as Fort La Bosse School Division resumed classes on September 5…Reston and District Library Moms and Tots meet every Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Library. Please join them for book reading, play time, coloring and coffee…Autumn Kirkpatrick participated in the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence, held in conjunction with the Northern Lights Barrel Race on August 21. There were 124 participants and they managed to collect a total of $16,800 in donations towards the Ronald McDonald House…There were 18 horses and riders gathered at the Reston Fairgrounds for another “Just for Fun” Gymkhana on August 29…Valleyview Co-op is pleased to sponsor free admittance to the showing at the Reston Memorial Theatre on September 14.

The 2018 Broomhill Field Trials were held September 5 to 9 in Broomhill, MB , with a total of 66 dogs participating in all events. The dogs ranged in ages from 1 1/2 to 11-years-old.  Currently, there are only two licensed dog-training operations in Manitoba and they are both run in Broomhill. Colvin and Mazie Davis of Alabama run their kennels south of Broomhill while Robin Gates  and his son Hunter of Georgia operate just west of Broomhill on Highway #345…The Province of Manitoba recently unveiled a series of fines that will be applied for cannabis related activity after legalization on October 17…While many of us are winterizing our campers, the RM of Pipestone is busy constructing new sites for the campground in Reston. The Reston Campground is being upgraded to 18 sites, fully serviced with 30 amp electrical, water and sewer.

Kyle Davidson of Reston was lucky winner at Reston’s Chase the Ace on Friday, September 14. There were 6 cards including the Ace of Spades left making Kyle the lucky winner of $39,621.50…In the fall of 2018 the RM of Pipestone Council will initiate Phase 2 of their Recreation Development Area. This will include a man-lake in the town of Reston. The lake will be utilized for activities such as swimming and non-motorized water sports. The lake will be created in a location adjacent to the Reston Campground, golf course and spray park…Seventy-six nursing graduates from Assiniboine Community College will move on to the next stage of their lives and start careers in healthcare. A graduation was held in Brandon on September 14, which marked the end of the two year Practical program for 48 students who completed their studies in either Brandon or Melita…Stephen Campbell attended the Special Olympics National Games that were held in Antigonish, Nova Scota with Team Manitoba and brought home bronze in softball.

 Sunrise Credit Union – Reston Branch hosted a Back to School Barbecue on Thursday, September 20, with the profits of $1,192.50 being forwarded to the Reston School Breakfast Club. Door prizes for the afternoon were won by Rossi Watt, Tanis Chalmers and Lesia Milliken…Reston School Awards Day: Band Awards – Izzy Watt, Kyla Cristobal, Marianne Quitiong, Jessica Kristof. Academic Awards – Kyla Cristobal, Izzy Watt, Jessica Kristof, Hunter Hiebert and Serena Campbell…Southwest Sabres have building year. The Southwest Sabres, coached by Brian Elder are off to a slow start this season but as manager Sandra Vinck says, they are a young team. The Sabres lost fifteen veterans last season leaving them with few experienced players. The team, which is comprised of players from Souris, Reston, Hartney, Wawanesa and Boissevain. A nice crowd attended the 67th Annual Fun Fair in the Reston Rec Plex on Friday, September 28th from 3 to 8 p.m. There were some new games as a well as old favourites like the Cake Walk and Fish Pond. A wonderful pulled pork supper was served from 5 – 7 p.m. and raffles took place…Reston & District Library hosted Virden author, Iris Munchinsky, as she gave a sneak peek of her book “Bridge of Shadows”…Grade 5 & 6 students from Reston and Pierson Schools attended West Souris River Conservation District’s annual Land and Water Day at Cherry Point Interpretive Nature Trail...Reston School hosted a Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 28. Staff, students and community members raised an amazing $2471.50 for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Marathon of Hope…According to Pipestone Albert Fire Assistant Deputy Chief Dean Brooker, to date 29 calls were made in 2018. In an average year, the Department has 20 – 45 calls. The calls are broken down to: 2 medical assists; 8 Motor vehicle accidents; 13 wildland fires; 3 false alarms; 3 vehicle fires.

Seniors Helping Hands hosted a Coffee Break on Monday, October 1 at the Reston Drop In Centre with proceeds of  $345.00 donated to the Alzheimer’s Society… The Pipestone-Albert Recreation Commission is offering a 5-week dog obedience class under the direction of Shelley Doan of Two Brown Dogs Canine Consultants…Last week’s rain and snow put a hamper on harvest and with plenty of canola and beans still in the fields, some farmers are worried they might run out of time…Students at Reston School helped promote Reston and District United Appeal by creating posters for the upcoming campaign. The students will be treated to a pizza day for all their hard work.

Reston School was pleased to have Dimitry Malman visit for a week to instruct us in Mosaics through the Artists in the Schools program… Terri Vandeberghe would like to invite everyone to come in and see their Veterans’ Week - Remembrance Day at the Reston and District Library displays to commemorate Veterans who have served in the past and to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members who continue to serve Canada in times of war, military conflict and Peace Keeping missions… Pipestone United Church celebrated 125 years of serving the community on Sunday, October 28 with Jean Dickson leading the service, Laurie Campion was organist and the choir welcomed visitors from the Reston United Church… Cromer Rink Committee hosted a re-opening celebration on Friday, October 26. “… The RM of Pipestone Dance Club hosted a Spooktacular Hallowe’en dance on Friday, October 26 from 5 – 9 at the RES… Laura Ellen (shown) and Larrie Elliott from Reston were recognized for 6 years of hosting International students.  On Friday, October 26th, Study Manitoba School Divisions celebrated 10 years of welcoming international students to Southwestern Manitoba…Over the weekend of September 21 and 22, John and Verna Olenick of Reston had some unique houseguests. Dr. Ernst and Pauline Möseneder and their son, Matthias of Austria were first time visitors to Canada and wanted to see where Ernst’s father, Hermann Möseneder was a prisoner of war (P.O.W.) during the Second World War…Christmas in the Country Trade Show was held in the Reston Rec Plex on Sunday, October 28 with approximately 350 people coming through the doors to browse with 55 exhibitor.

Can you imagine heading into winter without any mitts or gloves to wear? Winter in Canada is tough for people living in poverty. Reston and Pipestone United Churches want to help and we invite you to help too.

 Our 5-week project this year is called Hand it to Ya! We begin our project November 11, and we will “wrap it up” December 9, which is White Gift Sunday at our churches. On December 9, after our regular White Gift church services at each church, we plan to have a little party, which will be a potluck lunch, games, and we will count our warm mittens and coins…Back for its third year, the Ron and Clair Deacon Leaders Pay it Forward Program kicked off the third year with a special video guest that spoke to the entire Reston School about his journey in life and his company PELA Case that has created the world’s first compostable cellphone case. Matt Bertulli, President of Pela who partnered with PELA creator Jeremy Lang from Saskatoon shared their incredible made in Canada story…Logan Flannery, a 7th grade student at the Reston School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Pipestone Lions Club. Lions International Peace Poster 2nd prize winner – Logan Taylor…Forty-five pies were auctioned off by Brock Taylor of Taylor Auctions on Friday, November 2 raising a little over $7,000 for activities at the Reston Health Centre, Willow View PCH…In conjunction with the Manitoba Arts Network, Concerts in Care, Sarah Hagen was a visitor to the Willow View PCH in Reston on Wednesday, October 31on her tour across Canada. Hagen is a pianist and humorist and has won many awards with her sensitivity and heart.

Reston School Grades 1 to 8 were fortunate to receive a visit from two Oak Hammock Marsh educators on November 6.  Annual sponsorship of this valuable resource is thanks to the West Souris River Conservation District.  Shown is the Grade 2 class with Elsie learning All About Wetlands.  They learned about the 4 types of wetlands: marsh, swamp, bog and fen. Thank you to WSRCD for your generous contributions to Reston School!…Dylan MacDonald entertained at the Willow View PCH on Tuesday, November 6 through the Manitoba Arts Network’s Concerts in Care. Dylan is a leading band member of the group “The Middle Coast.” On his own time he plays a variety of classic songs by artists including Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Ian Tyson and many more. He also loves to get the audience singing along with him on legendary folk songs like “She’ll Be Coming Around The Mountain” and “You Are My Sunshine.”…The Grade 7 & 8 boys travelled to Killarney on Tuesday, November 6th for the Zone 9 volleyball competition. They won their first games against Killarney, lost to Deloraine, won one and lost one against Boissevain, defeated Melita and then Hartney in semi finals. This put them up against Deloraine in the finals.  They split the first two games but Reston came out victorious in the tie breaker. Congratulations boys on your championship win: Billy Skelton, Gabe Underwood, Jason Poirier, Logan Flannery, Craig McConnell, Cheryl MacKenzie (coach). Luke MacKenzie, Logan Taylor, Trentin Rowand, Nairn Cooper, Benjamin Pankratz…Reston School hosted a Remembrance Day Service on Friday, November 9th at 10:30 a.m. This year’s service focused on the 100th Anniversary of Armistice, timeline of the war and remembering those who fought for our country…This football season was one to take time and reflect on to find places for improvement. With a 1 in 8 record a growing year was the best way to describe it. It was great to see so many new players this year; players that are eager to learn and will become league leaders in the years to come. This year was Alex Kirkpatrick's last year as a Sabre. Leading the defense in tackles and interceptions, he will definitely be missed. Erik Forsyth, Josh Walker, and Hunter Hiebert will be entering their grade 12 year and are excited to lead the Sabres to bigger and better things.

Two-thirds of small firms negatively affected by Canada Post strike at an average cost of $3,000. CFIB calls on federal government to pass back to work legislation…There was a great turnout for the first RMH Breakfast Club, of 18 kids, Monday morning. Ages range from 5-14. A big thank-you to instructors, Nolan Jago & Dallas Williamson. The kids enjoyed cereal, muffins and juice for breakfast. Pancakes, fruit and milk are on the menu for next week. On-Ice instruction begins at 7:15 a.m. Kids come off the ice at 8:00 a.m. and enjoy a delicious breakfast before being walked to school at 8:35 a.m…This year the Renegades have added a new town to the community. Pierson is now apart of the Renegades family making them the R.E.M.P Renegades. Our grade 11’s will have to step up big time and be leaders as they make up the majority of the team. Erik Forsyth, Billy Patmore, and Justin Taylor are entering their second year as a Renegade. Coming back from a leg injury, Justin Taylor is practicing with the team but not yet playing. Coaches this year are Kent Schiltroth, Nathan Lee, Chris Elliott, and Dan Kristof as Manager…A modular classroom was moved to Reston on Friday, November 9th The unit is 25’x 36’ and will be used for the Grade 5 classroom. It is estimated that the classroom will be utilized within in six weeks….Take Our Kids to Work Day was Wednesday, November 14. Grade 9 students spend a day at work with a parent, relative or volunteer to help them learn about today’s workplace and explore possible future career options.This year our Grade 9 students spent the day at a variety of work places. One student experienced what it would be like to work in a restaurant at the Dennis County Cafe and another spent the day with little children at the day care here in town. One of the girls learned to clean at the hospital and one of the guys worked for the RM in both public works and head office. They did everything from carpentry, to social media consulting, to shop Forman at Four Seasons and hairdressing in Virden. One student travelled out of province to check out the oil business from the field site of a geologist on a rig, to the directional drilling office at Millennium Drilling in Carlyle…Canadian Wrestlling’s Elite was in Virden on Tuesday, November 13th with the Struttin’ & Cuttin’ Tour. This tour headlined WWE Legend Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake and Reston’s “Jacked Jesus” Tommy Lee Curtis…Since 2007 Tundra Oil & Gas, through the Richardson Foundation, has lent financial support to the West Souris River Conservation District for the district’s Energizing Environmental Education Program. Tundra’s support of $100,000 was recently renewed for another four years with a presentation to WSRCD representatives and Board members.

Dear Mr. Piwniuk, I must say I am incredibly disappointed in the Manitoba government for passing an amendment to the Education Property Tax Credit that will primarily affect lower income families who are already suffering from increases to MB Hydro rates, increased costs to food and other necessities due to rising costs of transportation, and other costs we incur. Sincerely, Amanda Isaac…South America is a long way from my farm near Reston, Manitoba.  Fred Grieg left home on November 11 as the farmer representative on the South American leg of the 2018 Canadian wheat new crop missions. Between November and December, new crop mission seminars will take place in 17 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North and South America. I’m part of a team made up of members of the Canadian value chain – Cereals Canada, Canadian International Grains Institute, Canadian Grain Commission and an exporter.  I’ll be back in Manitoba on November 24 after meeting with customers in Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and Chile (plus our first stop in Mississauga to meet with Canadian millers)…Reston Minor Hockey Day was held on Saturday, November 24 at the Reston Rink with Reston Initiation H vs. Hartney at 9:30 a.m.; Reston Initiation C vs. Melita at 10:45; Reston Novice vs. Carberry at 12:00 p.m.; Reston Atom Girls vs. Elkhorn at 1:45 p.m.; Reston Atom Boys vs. Shilo; Elkhorn Pee Wee vs. Wawanesa at 5:15 p.m.; REMP Renegades vs. Souris at 7:30 p.m…Reston’s Main Street looks amazing with new Christmas decorations on the lamp posts and the always beautiful winter wonderland display on the north side of the Reston & District Library.

RM of Pipestone hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Supper on Monday, December 3 at the Pipestone Hall with International Man of Mystery, Ken Sky (Ken Sawatzky) providing the entertainment…Bentley Davidson had a chance to meet with Santa after the merchant’s free show in Reston on Sunday, December 2… Shoppers had a chance to browse on December 2 for Santa Sunday. Alisha Davidson and Keri Bartel, local hairstylists at Blondie’s Beauty Bar, 3rd Street, Reston also have Thirty-One Bags, Norwex Cleaners, bath bombs and soaps for sale as well as hair products for that last minutes shopper…Willow View P.C.H. hosted Celebration of Lights on Monday, December 3 in memory of those who passed away this year. Reverend Matt Koovisk from St. John’s Anglican Church led the service and Lay Reader, Sheila Perreault read Prayers of the Faithful.

Reston and Pipestone United Churches hosted White Gift Sunday, on December 9th, the second Sunday of Advent and lit the Peace candle. All gifts were forwarded to the Westman Women’s Shelter in Brandon…Reston & District Library had a very special visitor on Wednesday, December 5th, during Moms & Tots time, when Santa came to hear their Christmas wishes...After a couple of years of inactivity the Manitoba Surface Rights Association held a Board meeting on December 5/2018 to accept board resignations and elect a new President and Vice President.  The new President is Bob Heaman (replacing Scott Andrew) and the Vice President is Kevin Gabrielle (replacing the late Carlyle Jorgensen).  The Association will be looking for new Board members to serve two-year terms at the Annual General Meeting, to be held in early April/2019….  Friends at the Alstone Lodge enjoyed “The Littles” joining them on Thursday, December 6 spreading Christmas Cheer.

Reston School Kindergarten to Grade 6 students presented Snow Biz!  - A fun-filled musical salute to the Joys of Winter by John Jacobson and Mac Huff on Thursday, December 14, at 7:00 p.m. to a full gymnasium…The communities of RM of Souris-Glenwood, RM of Pipestone, Town of Virden, RM of Wallace-Woodworth, Town of Melita, Municipality of Grassland, RM of Sifton, and RM of Deloraine-Winchester have come together to organize and facilitate the Southwest Business & Entrepreneur Expo…Spearing Service L.P. – Pipestone, graciously donated $1,000.00 or 10 Buckets of Sand to the RM Lake Project on Thursday, December 13…The Who Was Challenge for students in Grade 7 across the division was held at Reston School this December 12. There were teams from Reston, Virden, Oak Lake, Elkhorn and a Fort La Bosse team made up of students from Elkhorn and Reston.  Their challenge was to read 40 of the books in the series and then compete in a Reach for the Top format!...Residents of the Willow View P.C.H. in Reston invited two guests each to their annual Christmas supper held on Wednesday, December 12.
