Electoral boundaries will change for September 10 Provincial Election

The landscape for the next Provincial election, which Premier Brian Pallister has said will be held on Tuesday, September 10, will change drastically for many residents of the Riding Mountain constituency.

In December 2018, the independent Manitoba Electoral Boundaries Commission submitted its final report and all but one of Manitoba’s 57 electoral division boundaries were affected. Along with boundary changes, 14 of the 57 constituencies will have new names.

Under the Electoral Divisions Act, the province must recalculate constituency boundaries every 10 years to account for changes in population.

In western Manitoba, population losses in Swan River, Dauphin and Riding Mountain “resulted in significant changes to the boundaries of these electoral divisions,” the report said.

The Riding Mountain constituency will now include the southern portions of the Ellice-Archie and Prairie View municipalities, along with the municipalities of Hamiota, Pipestone and Wallace-Woodworth, as well as the Town of Virden, Birdtail Sioux First Nation, Canupawakpa First Nation and the Sioux Valley First Nation. These areas were formerly part of the Arthur-Virden constituency.

The municipalities of Riding Mountain West, Rossburn, and Russell-Binscarth, along with the Gambler First Nation and Waywayseecappo First Nation, formerly part of the Riding Mountain constituency, will now be part of the Swan River constituency, while the Riverdale Municipality will move into Spruce Woods.
